NEW BERN, NC—United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court on July 10, 2012, Shevon Ondro Harrell, 40, of Manteo, North Carolina, was sentenced to 160 months’ imprisonment by United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan.

A federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment on December 13, 2011. On February 16, 2012, Harrell pled guilty to distribution of a quantity of cocaine base (crack). According to evidence presented in court, on June 8, 2011, Harrell sold a quantity of cocaine base (crack) to an agent of the government at Harrell’s residence on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Harrell’s criminal history includes convictions for attempted homicide, firing into an occupied vehicle, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, and a prior federal conviction for distribution of cocaine base.

This case was part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) Operation Dare Devil, investigating importers and multi-level distributors of cocaine and cocaine base (crack) into Dare and Currituck Counties. To date, 11 people have been sentenced in federal court as a part of this operation.

Investigation of this case is being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation; the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation; the North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement; the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office; the Dare County Sheriff’s Office; the Nags Head Police Department; and the Kill Devil Hill Police Department. Special Assistant United States Attorney Timothy Severo represents the government. Mr Severo is a prosecutor with the New Hanover District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney Ben David has assigned him to the United States Attorney’s office to prosecute federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force criminal matters. This has been made possible by a grant funded by the Governor’s Crime Commission and the New Hanover County Commissioners.
