Bank Robber Sentenced in Federal Court

RALEIGH, NC—United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced that in federal court yesterday United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle sentenced LOUIS JOSEPH CAMPOMENOSI, 41, of Daphne, Alabama, to 132 months’ imprisonment.

On May 4, 2011, a federal grand jury returned a criminal indictment charging CAMPOMENOSI. On September 20, 2011, CAMPOMENOSI pled guilty to bank robbery and brandishing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

According to the investigation, on November 29, 2010, CAMPOMENOSI robbed the RBC Centura Bank in Cary, North Carolina, at gunpoint. After proceeding to the teller windows, he instructed the tellers to empty their drawers into a plastic bag he handed over. He told them, “I have a machine gun in my car,” and not to call the police. They complied, but put a dye pack into the bag. The total amount of money put into the bag was $7,562. A witness who saw CAMPOMENOSI exit the bank and start shaking red dust out of the bag from the dye pack that had exploded, took down the license plate number of his getaway car, and notified police. Police ran the plate, which identified CAMPOMENOSI.

A federal search warrant was executed at CAMPOMENOSI’s residence in Alabama, on December 1, 2010, where the getaway car was located. At the time of the arrest, CAMPOMENOSI confessed to the bank robbery. A search of the residence turned up a .45 caliber Glock, an AK-47 rifle, and plastic bags with dye, and dye-stained clothing.

This case was part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) initiative which encourages federal, state, and local agencies to cooperate in a unified “team effort” against gun crime, targeting repeat offenders who continually plague their communities. Investigation of this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cary Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Jay Exum prosecuted the case.
