Mother Receives Federal Prison Term for Murdering Her Daughter/U.S. Soldier

NEW BERN—United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that in federal court today Chief United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan, sentenced LINDA HOUGH SHANNON, 51, of Bethune, South Carolina to 262 months’ imprisonment followed by a five-year term of supervised release. SHANNON was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $512,780.
A criminal complaint was filed on February 25, 2010 charging SHANNON with the killing of her 32-year-old daughter. SHANNON pled guilty on September 12, 2010 to a criminal information alleging second degree murder.
The victim was a United States Army soldier assigned to the 583rd Combat Support Company, part of the 18th Fires Brigade on Fort Bragg. The victim resided in post housing on Fort Bragg. SHANNON was living with her daughter on Fort Bragg when the murder occurred.
SHANNON and the victim became involved in a verbal argument. After the verbal argument, SHANNON attacked the victim with a large kitchen knife. SHANNON inflicted over 150 stab and cutting wounds to the victim that resulted in the victim’s death. The victim was survived by her husband.
Investigation of this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Army Criminal Investigative Division. Special Assistant United States Attorney (Captain) Alexander R. Schneider represented the government.
