Former Carteret County Sheriff’s Deputy Sentenced

NEW BERN, NC—United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that today Chief United States District Judge Louise W. Flanagan sentenced a former Carteret County Deputy Sheriff for his conduct in a conspiracy to misappropriate county funds. THOMAS MARK FARLOW, 34, of Beaufort, North Carolina, received five years’ probation with one month of intermittent confinement. The Court also imposed $35,000 in restitution.

On April 16, 2010, FARLOW was charged by Criminal Indictment and on June 1, 2010, pled guilty to misprision of a felony, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 4.

From 2002 to 2006, FARLOW, a drug detective with the Sheriff’s Department, provided drug funds to be given to then Sheriff Ralph Thomas, knowing a portion of those funds would be embezzled and stolen. In addition, during this same time period, FARLOW borrowed drug funds for personnel expenses and used drug funds to purchase lunches for himself and others in the Sheriff’s Department.

The form Sheriff’s sentencing date has been rescheduled to October 13, 2010.

Investigation of this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigative Division, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys J. Frank Bradsher and David Bragdon handled the case for the United States.
