Gunman, Robber Receives 32 Years in Federal Prison

U.S. Attorney’s Office April 07, 2010
  • Eastern District of North Carolina (919) 856-4530

RALEIGH, NC—A man was sentenced today for weapons charges connected with the armed robberies of a Dollar General and First Citizens Bank announced the United States Attorney’s Office. United States District Judge James C. Dever, III, sentenced WILLIAM LEE GREEN, II, 45, of Parkton, North Carolina, to 384 months’ imprisonment followed by five years supervised release. The court also imposed restitution payable to the victims of the robberies in the amount of $1,494.00.

A Federal Grand Jury returned a criminal indictment on November 11, 2008. On November 5, 2009, GREEN pled guilty to two counts of brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

On September 9, 2008, GREEN entered the Dollar General Store on Legion Road in Hope Mills, North Carolina. Pointing an H&K .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol at the store’s clerk, GREEN demanded money. He fled the store on a bicycle.

On September 17, 2008, GREEN entered the First Citizens Bank and Trust on Owen Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina, carrying the same H&K pistol. GREEN pointed the firearm at the employees and demanded money. GREEN fled on foot with $1,369.00.

GREEN was apprehended the following day after he robbed the Family Dollar Store on Legion Road. When GREEN could not get the vehicle he hopped into to start, following the robbery, he assaulted a victim in an attempt to carjack the vehicle. When that failed he confronted a second victim who relinquished the vehicle to GREEN. When that vehicle was disabled, and with law enforcement pursuing, GREEN obtained a third vehicle by force. The high-speed chase ended and GREEN was apprehended after he struck a Cumberland County Sheriff’s vehicle.

“The seriousness of the defendant’s conduct is mirrored in the significant amount of prison time imposed,” commented Mr. Holding. The relentless methods used by the defendant to allude capture by law enforcement and the terrorizing of 13 victims requires a just punishment, which we feel was handed down today.”

Investigation of this case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, the Hope Mills Police Department and the Fayetteville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Thomas B. Murphy represented the government.
