Bridgton Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 06, 2009
  • District of Maine (207) 780-3257

PORTLAND, ME—United States Attorney Paula D. Silsby announced today that Matthew Jarvinen, 24, of Bridgton, Maine, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court to 60 months in prison and three years of supervised release for the robbery of the Bangor Savings Bank in Cornish, Maine, on March 27, 2009. U.S. District Court Judge D. Brock Hornby imposed the sentence following Jarvinen’s guilty plea entered on May 26, 2009.

Court documents indicate that on March 27, 2009, at approximately 1:17 p.m., the Bangor Savings Bank branch located at 180 Maple Street, Cornish, Maine, reported a bank robbery. A male wearing a dark sweatshirt and dark aviator style sunglasses with gold frames passed the bank teller a note stating, “give me all the money in the drawer, I don’t want to have to hurt you, but I will if I have to.” The teller complied with the demand and gave the male approximately $3280 in cash.

Law enforcement officers with the York County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office and Federal Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and soon learned that a male wearing a hooded sweatshirt and sunglasses recently stopped at a local convenience store and sought directions to the nearest bank. Law enforcement officers received a photograph of the male from the store’s surveillance system and immediately recognized the male as Matthew Jarvinen. Law enforcement subsequently obtained still photographs of the robbery from the bank’s surveillance system and recognized this individual to also be Matthew Jarvinen. Through subsequent investigation, law enforcement recovered approximately $1200 of the stolen money.

U.S. Attorney Silsby praised the Federal Bureau of Investigation, York County Sheriff’s Office, Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bridgton, Maine Police Department for their thorough investigative efforts which resulted in the arrest and prosecution of Matthew Jarvinen.
