Seabrook Man Sentenced for Bank Robbery

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 01, 2009
  • District of New Hampshire (603) 225-1552

CONCORD, NH—United States Attorney for the District of New Hampshire John P. Kacavas announced today that Freddy Delavega, of Seabrook, New Hampshire, was sentenced to federal prison for 168 months after pleading guilty to committing the December 16, 2008 robbery of the Citizens Bank located at 161 Lafayette Road, Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Delavega was also sentenced to three years of supervised release, which will begin after he is released from prison. During the term of his supervised release, Delavega’s behavior will be monitored by the United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office.

On December 16, 2008, a lone robber entered the Citizens Bank and handed the tellers a note demanding money and threatening the use of a weapon. Tellers handed over a sum of money and the robber left the bank on foot. Witnesses saw the robber get into a blue pickup bearing Maine license plates. The pickup was stopped after a short pursuit by the police. The passenger in the truck, later identified as Freddy Delavega, was on a cell phone and holding a knife to his own throat. He threatened to cut himself if the police came any closer. After a brief standoff, the police were able to subdue Delavega and prevent him from seriously harming himself. Delavega was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being charged with the robbery. Most of the money taken in the robbery was recovered from Delavega.

The driver of the pickup was identified as Dana Welch. The police investigation revealed that Welch had offered to give Delavega a ride and was unaware of Delavega’s plan to rob the bank. Welch was not charged.

The police departments for Hampton Falls, Portsmouth, Seabrook, and Kingston, the New Hampshire State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisted in the investigation of the robbery.
