Birmingham Man Indicted for Armed Bank Robbery of Compass Bank in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM—A federal grand jury today indicted a Birmingham man for a November robbery of an East Birmingham bank, U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick J. Maley announced.
A three-count indictment filed in U.S. District Court charges DONALD JAMES BINNS, 25, with armed bank robbery, using and carrying a firearm during the armed bank robbery, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
According to the indictment, On Nov. 9, Binns entered the Compass Bank at 9208 Parkway East and, armed with a .380-caliber handgun, robbed the bank of more than $4,400. Birmingham police apprehended Binns shortly after the robbery.
The FBI, Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Birmingham Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph P. Montminy is prosecuting the case.
Members of the public are reminded that an indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
