Woman Charged in Federal Court with Bank Fraud

U.S. Attorney’s Office August 26, 2009
  • Northern District of Alabama (205) 244-2001

BIRMINGHAM, AL—A federal grand jury today indicted a 32-year-old Warrior woman on charges she embezzled more than $62,000 from a Warrior bank, United States Attorney Joyce White Vance and FBI Special Agent in Charge Patrick Maley announced today.

MAQUETTA LAVETTE GOLDSMITH faces bank fraud charges in a two-count indictment filed today at U.S. District Court in Birmingham.

Count one charges that beginning in June of 2006 through July 28, 2007, Goldsmith, an employee of Peoples Bank of North Alabama, embezzled more than $62,000 and submitted false documents to bank authorities in an effort to conceal her theft of vault funds.

The maximum sentence for count one is not more than 30 years' imprisonment and a $1 million fine. Count two specifies $62,900 will be forfeited to the government if Goldsmith is convicted of the charges in the indictment.

Special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked this case. Assistant United States Attorney Patrick Carney is prosecuting the matter.

Members of the public are reminded that the indictment contains only charges. A defendant is presumed innocent of the charges, and it will be the government’s burden to prove a defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial.
