Huntsville Woman Sentenced to 30 Years for Redstone Arsenal Murder

U.S. Attorney’s Office April 14, 2009
  • Northern District of Alabama (205) 244-2001

HUNTSVILLE, AL—VALORIE KIEL COX, 35, of Huntsville, Alabama was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Huntsville to 30 years in prison. COX was sentenced for murder in the second degree of Darren Spurlock on Redstone Arsenal in connection with a vehicular homicide.

On May 30, 2008, COX, trying to elude Huntsville police officers, entered Redstone Arsenal, a government facility, driving in excess of 90 mph, when she ran the red light at Rideout and Martin Road, killing Darren Spurlock. At that time, COX’s driving privileges were suspended. COX was indicted in June, 2008 and plead guilty in December, 2008.

“This is a just result which unfortunately does not ease the loss of life which resulted from her careless actions and use of drugs. Our sympathy remains with the Spurlock family,” stated United States Attorney Alice H. Martin.

"We are pleased with the sentence today. The FBI wishes to extend its sympathy to the family of Mr. Spurlock," stated Acting Special Agent in Charge Charles E. Regan, Federal Bureau of Investigation.

This case was investigated by officers of the Huntsville Police Department, Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division. Assistant United States Attorney David H. Estes prosecuted the case on behalf of the United States.
