Serial Bank Robber Sentenced to Over 12 Years in Prison for Bank Robberies in Anne Arundel, Carroll, Frederick, and Howard Counties
Admitted to Five Other Bank Robberies in Georgia, North Carolina, and Delaware

BALTIMORE, MD—U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Zachary Scott Shanaberger, age 31, of Carroll County, Maryland, today to 151 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for four counts of bank robbery. Judge Blake enhanced Shanaberger’s sentence upon finding that he is a career offender. Judge Blake also ordered Shanaberger to pay restitution of $22,584.50.
The sentence was announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein; Special Agent in Charge Richard A. McFeely of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Anne Arundel County Police Chief James Teare, Sr.; Chief Jeffrey Spalding of the Westminster Police Department; Frederick County Sheriff Charles A. “Chuck” Jenkins; and Howard County Police Chief William McMahon.
According to Shanaberger’s plea agreement, from January 28 through March 27, 2010, Shanaberger robbed nine banks in Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina, and Delaware through the use of written or verbal threats. Specifically, Shanaberger stole: $2,790 from the Bank Annapolis on West McKinsey Road in Severna Park, Maryland, on March 6, 2010; $2,240 from the BB&T Bank on Main Street in Westminster, Maryland, on March 15, 2010; $479 from the M&T Bank on Spectrum Drive in Frederick, Maryland, on March 25, 2010; and $1,850 from the Howard Bank on Baltimore National Pike in Ellicott City, Maryland, on March 27, 2010. In each case, Shanaberger presented a note to the teller demanding money and indicating that he had a gun.
In a similar manner, from January 28, 2010 through February 26, 2010, Shanaberger robbed a bank in Kenneshaw, Georgia, Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, two banks in Marietta, Georgia and a bank in Dover, Delaware, stealing over $15,225 in these robberies.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the FBI, the Westminster Police Department, Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and the Anne Arundel and Howard County Police Departments for their work in this investigation and thanked Assistant United States Attorneys Paul E. Budlow and Kristi N. O’Malley, who prosecuted the case.
