Mollie Halpern: During National Police Week, the FBI is highlighting fugitives wanted for violent acts toward law enforcement officers in an effort to bring them to justice.
One of those fugitives is Charles Lee Hill, who was allegedly involved in the shooting death of a New Mexico State Police officer during a traffic stop outside Albuquerque, New Mexico, in November 1971.
Officer Robert Rosenbloom’s son—and namesake—was just 2 when he lost his father.
Robert Rosenbloom: I don't have any specific memories of my dad. I don't know what his voice sounded like. I don't have any dad jokes or anything that he used to say or do. That's the hardest part for me, I think.
Halpern: After the shooting, Hill and his two accomplices hid for days, then allegedly kidnapped a tow truck driver at gunpoint and forced him to take them to the airport.
That’s where they allegedly hijacked an aircraft full of passengers headed to Chicago.
Bryan Acee: The pilot was forced to fly the plane to Tampa, Florida, where aircraft authorities were able to exchange hostages for fuel.
Halpern: That was Special Agent Bryan Acee, who says Hill and his accomplices then flew to Havana, Cuba—where Hill still lives.
Hill has a scar on his left check, uses several aliases, and is around 70 years old.
If you have information about this case, contact your local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.
With Wanted by the FBI, I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau.
