Director James Comey: During National Police Week, as we honor those in law enforcement, we pause especially to remember our colleagues who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Halpern: I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week. FBI preliminary statistics show that 27 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty in 2013. That’s a 44 percent decrease when compared to the year before. An additional 49 officers were accidentally killed in the line of duty last year.

Comey: We reflect upon their sacrifices. We take strength from their examples of heroism and courage. And we resolve to continue their noble work.

Halpern: The FBI also remembers our own fallen agents. This month marks the one-year anniversary of the deaths of Hostage Rescue Team Special Agents Chris Lorek and Stephen Shaw, who died during a counterterrorism exercise. A total of 36 FBI special agents have been killed as a direct result of adversarial action. And another 21 agents and one professional staff employee lost their lives in the performance to their duty.
