I’m Mollie Halpern of the Bureau, and this is FBI, This Week.

The academy is a six- to nine-week program designed to give qualified community leaders an up close and personal look at how the FBI carries out its mission. Assistant Director of the Office of Public Affairs Michael Kortan…

Michael Kortan: The Citizens Academy offers a first-hand look at how the FBI operates. And at the same time, we get valuable feedback from members of the community who participate in the program.

Halpern: Special agents and other FBI experts teach the classes.

Kortan: The topics range from how we investigate cases to policies and ethics issues to the use of firearms.

Halpern: Lilliam Miller is a recent graduate of the Citizens Academy in San Juan. The business owner and mother of three says graduating is one of her life’s top accomplishments.

Lilliam Miller: It was the most amazing thing for me. Graduating from the academy, you do have a responsibility to be a better citizen.
