Elder Fraud Telemarketing Scam Call Recording

A caller claiming to be from OPCO—a company operated by Mark Eldon Wilson, who was sentenced in September 2018 in connection with his operation of a fraudulent telemarketing scheme—attempts to sell bogus credit card fraud protection to an elderly prospective victim over the phone.

Caller: Good morning. Lewis ____, please.

Prospective Victim: Yeah, this is Lewis.

Caller: Mr. _____, this is Sammie Danielo calling you from OPCO’s fraud watch division. It’s regarding the security of your Visa and MasterCard accounts. Due to the increase in computer-related frauds, we’ve made some very important changes to our policies. And I just want to brief you on those changes Mr. _____. Okay?

Prospective Victim: Alright, hold one second here.

Caller: It’s standard procedure that we’re telling all the customers that now that because of computer-related fraud …

Prospective Victim: Uh-huh …

Caller: … the cardholders are held responsible to the MasterCard and Visa. So that right now what we’re doing is we’re providing protection. So right now, we underwrite any extra fraud charge on your credit card. We underwrite it right away. You’ll also be receiving a package in about seven to 10 days from now …

Prospective Victim: Oh, okay…

Caller: … via UPS. And in this package, you’ll find stickers and also a registration form. And on this registration form, you’ll write down all your account numbers.

Prospective Victim: Uh-huh…

Caller: Telephone cards, department store cards, any other cards that you have in the household …

Prospective Victim: Oh yeah…

Caller: … so that we can protect all of them. Now, today I will be giving you a new security code. Okay?

Prospective Victim: Alright.

Caller: Now, in order for me to give you a security code I just need to ensure that you are the right authorized card holder. So, if you could just confirm your card with me, okay?

Prospective Victim: Uh-huh. Alright.

Caller: Which card are you going to be using? Your Visa or your MasterCard?
