Anchorage Drug Dealer Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for Drug and Gun Crimes

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 01, 2010
  • District of Alaska (907) 271-5071

ANCHORAGE, AK—United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today, July 1, 2010, that Maurice Marquette Mackey, of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage to 15 years in prison for his convictions of distribution of controlled substances, possession of controlled substances with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

Mackey, 34, was sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline.

According to information presented to the court by Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin White, Mackey sold crack cocaine on three separate occasions to confidential informants working for DEA, ATF, and the FBI. The total amount of crack cocaine that he distributed amounted to 64.7 grams. When law enforcement arrested Mackey at his residence, they found two rifles, one of which was loaded, boxes of ammunition, scales used to weigh drugs, and approximately 87 grams of cocaine. Mackey also had a video surveillance system in his residence, and the entry way appeared to be strategically blocked with a cinder block and part of a closet door. The residence resembled a “stash house,” rather than a place to live.

Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Beistline noted the serious nature of the crime, as well as Mackey’s history of dealing drugs. In 1997, Mackey sold crack cocaine to an informant working for APD and received a suspended imposition of sentence for third degree misconduct involving a controlled substance. Judge Beistline noted a need to deter the defendant and others from dealing drugs and “profiting from the illness of drug addicts.”

In addition to the prison sentence, Judge Beistline ordered that Mackey forfeit a CN Romarm SA/Cugir rifle to the government.

Ms. Loeffler commended the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Mackey. Ms. White is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who is funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
