Felon Sentenced to 33 Months in Federal Prison for Firearms Crime

ANCHORAGE, AK—United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced that on June 30, 2010, Douglass Gordon Doggett, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage to 33 months in prison for his conviction of being a felon in possession of firearms.

Doggett, 33, was sentenced by Chief United States District Court Judge Ralph R. Beistline.

According to information presented to the court by Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin White, Doggett, a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms, sold a Smith & Wesson .44 caliber revolver and a Smith & Wesson 9mm semi-automatic pistol to a confidential informant working for the FBI. Doggett has two prior felony convictions from the state of Alaska. In 1995, he was convicted of felony larceny, and in 2006, he was convicted of misconduct involving a controlled substance in the fourth degree.

Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Beistline noted the serious nature of the crime, as well as Doggett’s lengthy and violent criminal history. In addition to his prior felony convictions, Doggett has multiple convictions for domestic violence, false information, unsworn falsification, misconduct involving a controlled substance, and driving without a license. Doggett also has a history of fleeing from law enforcement and violating the terms of his probation and bail release. In imposing a sentence of 33 months, Judge Beistline also emphasized a need to protect the community from gun and drug dealers.

Ms. Loeffler commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Anchorage Police Department for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Doggett. Ms. White is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who is funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
