Multiple Felon Pleads Guilty to Possession of a Stolen Firearm

U.S. Attorney’s Office June 09, 2010
  • District of Alaska (907) 271-5071

ANCHORAGE, AK—Acting United States Attorney Kevin R. Feldis announced that on June 3, 2010, Joel William Corwin, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, pled guilty in federal court in Anchorage to being a felon in possession of a firearm and to possession of a stolen firearm.

Corwin, 32, pled guilty to the two-count indictment before Senior United States District Court Judge H. Russel Holland.

In connection with the guilty pleas, Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin White advised the court that Corwin sold a Cobray M11 9mm semi-automatic pistol to a confidential informant working for the FBI. A review of Anchorage Police Department records revealed that the firearm sold by Corwin was reported stolen in 2004. Corwin has two prior felony convictions for criminal mischief and eluding.

Judge Holland scheduled sentencing for August 27, 2010. The law provides for a maximum total sentence of ten years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the criminal history of the defendant.

Corwin will remain in custody, pending sentencing.

Mr. Feldis commended the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Corwin. Ms. White is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who is funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
