Guilty Verdict in Federal Bank Robbery Trial

U.S. Attorney’s Office July 22, 2010
  • District of New Mexico (505) 346-7274

On July 21, 2010, a federal jury returned a verdict of guilty against Alan Curtis Tukes, a 59-year old resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, on bank robbery charges after a three-day trial before United States Senior District Judge John Edwards Conway. Tukes was convicted of robbing the Compass Bank located at 13140 Central Avenue SE in Albuquerque on September 23, 2009.

According to the trial witnesses, at approximately 9:56 a.m. on September 23, Tukes entered the Compass Bank wearing a black ski-mask, carrying a backpack, and holding an object in his right hand that bank tellers believed to be a firearm. Witnesses testified that, while a bank teller complied with Tukes’ demand that he put all his money into the backpack, Tukes repeatedly threatened to kill the bank employees if they activated silent alarms. Two minutes after he entered, Tukes fled from the bank with a backpack stuffed with more than $8,900.00. Shortly thereafter, Tukes was arrested by officers of the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) and the New Mexico State Police (NMSP).

Tukes is detained pending sentencing and faces a statutory maximum penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, three years’ supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Rumaldo Armijo and Louis Valencia and was investigated by APD, NMSP, and the Albuquerque Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
