Auburn Man Charged with Bank Robbery

Andrew T. Baxter, United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York announced today that an Auburn man has been charged with bank robbery.

EDWARD FRANCIS PELC, 52, was charged with bank robbery by a federal grand jury in Syracuse. The indictment alleges that PELC robbed the Bank of America branch at 120 Genesee Street on August 10, 2009. According to the indictment, PELC made off with $5,368.

Surveillance photographs from inside the bank were released to news outlets following the robbery which occurred at 11:35 a.m. on August 10, 2009. Citizens believing they recognized PELC in these photographs thereafter contacted the police. PELC was arrested by Auburn police at approximately 5:30 p.m. the day of the robbery in the City of Auburn.

PELC is scheduled to be arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge George H. Lowe in Syracuse at 2:00 p.m. on September 3, 2009. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

This case was investigated by the City of Auburn Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant United States Attorney Edward R. Broton, who can be reached at 315-448-0672.

The indictment merely sets forth an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until the charge is proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
