The Seattle Division honors Bahaa Wanly for brokering and facilitating ties between the Seattle-area Somali community and local and federal law enforcement. Mr. Wanly has reached out to various communities within the greater Seattle area to foster an environment of understanding and dialogue. Mr. Wanly’s extensive and exhaustive efforts have helped to strengthen relationships between these groups and federal law enforcement. Whether in regards to civil rights or other matters, these talks have played an instrumental role in improving community relations.

Mr. Wanley has served as host and facilitator for numerous gatherings, bringing the FBI and Muslim community leaders together. Mr. Wanley’s community awareness has led to increased and fruitful relationships between the Cham and Somali communities as well as Muslim community leaders at local mosques. Mr. Wanly has a unique ability to cross cultural boundaries, clearly explains concepts and issues, and articulates the various concerns of the communities. Through his ongoing efforts, Mr. Wanly has demonstrated that engagement and dialogue are key to establishing successful relationships.

In a ceremony at FBI Headquarters on April 4, 2014, Director James B. Comey recognized the recipients of the 2013 Director’s Community Leadership Award. These leaders, selected by their area FBI field office, have demonstrated outstanding contributions to their local communities through service. The FBI is grateful for the work of each of these individuals and organizations on behalf of their communities.

“This year’s honorees have distinguished themselves in remarkable ways through their hard work, their leadership, and their strength of character,” said Director Comey. “They are ordinary citizens, but what they have accomplished is nothing short of extraordinary.”
