Overview

The most populous region, the South, accounted for 42.2 percent of all violent crimes in 2014. Lesser volumes of 23.3 percent in the West, 19.4 percent in the Midwest, and 15.1 percent in the Northeast were recorded.

In 2014, 46.0 percent of the nation’s estimated total number of murders occurred in the South. The Midwest and West each had 20.5 percent of murders, followed by the Northeast with 13.1 percent.

During 2014, 43.5 percent of the estimated number of property crimes were recorded in the South. The West was next with 24.6 percent, followed by the Midwest with 19.5 percent, and the Northeast with 12.3 percent.
