Percent Change, for Consecutive Years

The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

General comment

This table provides the percent change for consecutive years from 2008 through
2012 for offenses known to law enforcement for the nation.

Methodology

The data used in creating this table were from law enforcement agencies submitting 6 or
more common months of offense reports from 2008 through 2012. When the FBI
determines certain variables have created unusual fluctuations in the data, those data are
excluded from the trend tabulations.

Population estimation

The FBI calculated the 2012 state growth rates using the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 and
2012 provisional state/national population estimates. The FBI then estimated
population figures for city and county jurisdictions by applying the 2012 state growth
rate to the updated 2011 U.S. Census Bureau data.
