Full-time Law Enforcement Employees by Region and Geographic Division by Population Group, Number and Rate per 1,000 Inhabitants, 2011

  • In 2011, law enforcement agencies in U.S. cities reported an average of 2.9 full-time law enforcement employees, including both sworn officers and civilians, per 1,000 inhabitants.
  • The rate of full-time law enforcement employees in cities in the South was the highest at 3.4 per 1,000 inhabitants. 
  • In cities in the Northeast, the rate of full-time law enforcement employees was 3.3 per 1,000 inhabitants.
  • In cities in the Midwest, the rate of full-time law enforcement employees was 2.6 per 1,000 inhabitants.
  • The rate of full-time law enforcement employees in cities in the West was 2.3 per 1,000 inhabitants.
