Ten-Year Arrest Trends, Totals, 2002–2011

  • The number of persons arrested nationwide in 2011 decreased 7.1 percent when compared with the number of those arrested in 2002.
  • The number of arrests for violent crimes in 2011 declined 13.2 percent when compared with arrest figures for 2002; the largest decrease (30.2 percent) was reported for forcible rape.
  • Robbery was the only violent crime offense for which the number of persons arrested increased (0.4 percent) in 2011 when compared with 2002 arrest data.
  • The number of persons arrested for property crimes increased 4.0 percent in 2011 when compared with the number of those arrested for property crimes in 2002.  However, arrests for motor vehicle thefts dropped 52.5 percent in 2011 when compared to arrests for that offense in 2002.
  • The number of adults arrested in 2011 decreased 2.7 percent when compared with the number of adults arrested in 2002.
  • The number of juveniles arrested dropped 30.4 percent in 2011 when compared with the 2002 figure.
