Sterling Man Sentenced for Receipt of Child Pornography

U.S. Attorney’s Office May 01, 2009
  • Eastern District of Virginia (703) 299-3700

ALEXANDRIA, VA—William Joseph Tupi, age 52, of Sterling, Va., was sentenced today to 84 months imprisonment, followed by 10 years of supervised release.  Tupi will also be required to register as a sex offender in any U.S. jurisdiction in which he lives, works or attends school. Tupi pled guilty on Jan. 28, 2009, to receipt of child pornography.

Dana J. Boente, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Joseph Persichini, Jr., Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, made the announcement after sentencing by United States District Court Gerald Bruce Lee.

According to court documents and proceedings, based on information obtained from another user’s computer, it was determined that between July and October of 2007, Tupi received multiple images of child pornography through the “Google Hello” photo sharing program.  Pursuant to this information, investigators executed a search warrant at Tupi’s residence and seized multiple computers and computer equipment.  A forensic analysis of this computer equipment revealed thousands of images and movies of child pornography and child erotica.  Tupi has two prior convictions related to possession of child pornography.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI Washington Field Office.  Special Assistant United States Attorney Andrew McCormack, who is on detail from the Department of Justice’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, prosecuted the case for the United States.
