The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.
General comments
This table provides the number of offenses known to law enforcement for the first 6 months of 2006 and 2007 in cities with populations of 100,000 and over.
Methodology
- Data from law enforcement agencies whose resident population falls below 100,000 are published in this table for 2 consecutive years. After which, if the population remains below 100,000, the agency’s data are no longer published in this table.
- When the FBI determines that an agency’s data collection methodology does not comply with the national UCR Program’s guidelines, the number of offenses are not included in the table and the discrepancy will be explained in a footnote.
- The FBI does not publish arson data in this table unless the UCR Program receives data from either the agency or the state for the first 6 months of the year.
Population estimation
Population estimates for 2007 were not available for inclusion in this table. The FBI calculated 2006 state growth rates using revised 2005 state/national population estimates and 2006 provisional state/national population estimates provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. The FBI then estimated 2006 population figures for city and county jurisdictions by applying the 2006 state growth rate to the revised 2005 U.S. Census Bureau city and county jurisdiction data.
