The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

General comments

This table provides the percent change in offenses known to law enforcement, by geographic region, for the first 6 months of 2006 and 2007.

Methodology

The data used in creating this table were from law enforcement agencies submitting 3 to 6 common months of offense reports for 2006 and 2007. When the FBI determines certain variables have created unusual fluctuations in the data, those data are excluded from the trend tabulations.

Regions

The U.S. Census Bureau has established the four regions of the United States, which are used by the UCR Program in compiling the Nation’s crime data. The following table lists the 50 states and the District of Columbia arranged according to the regions of the United States.
