In 2007, 85 officers from the DOJ were assaulted. Of these officers, 25 were injured—2 with firearms. The following provides information by agency within the DOJ.
- Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives:
14 officers were assaulted, 4 of whom were injured.
- Federal Bureau of Investigation:
17 officers were assaulted, and 1 was injured.
- U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration:
1 officer was assaulted and injured with a firearm.
- U.S. Marshals Service:
53 officers were assaulted, 19 of whom were injured.
Type of activity
Officers from the DOJ were performing the following activities at the time they were attacked:
- 40 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
- 20 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
- 12 officers were assigned to court duty.
- 8 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
- 2 officers were assigned to patrol or guard duty.
- 3 officers were performing other official duties.
Weapons
- 43 of the 85 DOJ officers were attacked by persons using personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
- 20 of the DOJ officers were attacked with vehicles.
- 17 officers were attacked with firearms.
- 4 of the officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
- 1 officer was attacked with another type of dangerous weapon.
Dispositional information
In the attacks on DOJ officers, law enforcement authorities identified 66 suspects. Disposition information was available for 27 of these suspects at the time of this report:
- Prosecution was declined for 8 alleged assailants.
- 6 suspects were awaiting trial.
- 5 suspects are deceased.
- 3 suspects were tried and found guilty.
- 3 suspects remain at large.
- 1 suspect is pending prosecutive opinion.
- 1 suspect was found not guilty or charges were dismissed.
