Within the U.S. DOI in 2007, 247 officers were assaulted. Sixty-two of these officers
sustained injuries. The following provides information by agency within the DOI.
- Bureau of Indian Affairs:
123 officers were assaulted, and 31 of these officers were injured.
- Bureau of Land Management:
4 officers were assaulted, but none were injured.
- National Park Service:
107 officers were assaulted, 30 of whom were injured.
- U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service:
13 officers were assaulted, and 1 of these officers was injured.
Type of activity
At the time of their attacks, officers from the DOI were performing the following activities:
- 133 officers were making arrests or serving summonses.
- 58 officers were on patrol or guard duty.
- 27 officers were conducting investigations or searches.
- 15 officers were maintaining custody of prisoners.
- 11 officers were assigned to protection duty.
- 3 officers were performing other official duties.
Weapons
- 197 of the 247 DOI officers were attacked by persons using personal weapons, such as hands, fists, or feet.
- 19 of the DOI officers were attacked with vehicles.
- 8 officers were attacked with blunt instruments.
- 6 of the officers were attacked with firearms.
- 5 of the officers were attacked with knives or other cutting instruments.
- 12 of the officers were attacked with other types of dangerous weapons.
Dispositional information
Law enforcement authorities identified 243 suspects in the assaults on DOI officers. At the time of this report:
- 131 alleged assailants were tried and found guilty.
- 65 suspects were awaiting trial.
- Prosecution was declined for 13 known assailants.
- 12 suspects were either found not guilty or charges were dismissed.
- 12 suspects were awaiting prosecutive opinion.
- 7 suspects remain at large.
- 2 suspects were found incompetent to stand trial.
- 1 suspect is deceased.
