Crime in the United States, Offense and Population Distribution by Region, 2005

The FBI collects these data through the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program.

General comments

• This table provides the percent distribution of violent crime, property crime, murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft offenses by region.
• The UCR Program does not have sufficient data to estimate arson offenses.
• This table represents the 2005 geographical distribution of estimated offenses and population.

Methodology

• The data used in creating this table were from all law enforcement agencies in the UCR Program (including those submitting less than 12 months of data).
• Crime statistics include estimated offense totals (except arson) for agencies submitting less than 12 months of offense reports for each year.
• The FBI bases population distributions on the U.S. Census Bureau's provisional estimates for 2005. Population statistics are based on the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 revised estimates and 2005 provisional estimates.

Regions and divisions

The U.S. Census Bureau has established the four regions of the United States along with their nine subdivisions, which are used by the UCR Program in compiling the Nation's crime data. The following table lists the 50 states and the District of Columbia arranged according to the regions and divisions of the United States.
