Sex Offender Sentenced to 15 Years in Federal Prison for Receipt and Possession of Child Pornography

U.S. Attorney’s Office November 18, 2010
  • Middle District of Florida (813) 274-6000

ORLANDO—U.S. Attorney Robert E. O'Neill announces that U.S. District Judge Mary S. Scriven today sentenced Rodney W. Graves, Jr. (age 24 of Rockledge, Florida) to 15 years in federal prison, and a 15-year term of supervised release, for receipt and possession of child pornography. Graves pled guilty on August 31, 2010. He was a registered sex offender at the time he received and possessed the child pornography.

According to court documents, on February 17, 2010, an FBI agent in Oklahoma downloaded 14 images of child pornography from Graves, and on March 3, 2010, a detective with Martin County Sheriff's Office downloaded several images of child pornography from Graves. Subsequently, agents executed a search warrant at Graves' apartment in Rockledge, Florida and found about 85 images of child pornography on his laptop computer. Graves admitted to the agents that he downloaded child pornography and that he knew it was illegal. Some of the images of child pornography depicted children younger than 12 years old.

In August 2005, Graves was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in the Athens County Municipal Court, Athens, Ohio. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, and fined $250.00.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state,, and local resources to better locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, and to identify and rescue victims.
