A Cahokia man was sentenced to one year and a day in federal prison on April 8, 2011, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced today. Octavius Harris, 22, of Cahokia, Illinois, received a one year and a day sentence for false statement during the purchase of a firearm, and falsely making obligations of the United States. Following release from imprisonment, Harris will serve three years of supervised release. Harris was also ordered to pay a $300 special assessment and ordered to pay $840.00 in restitution. While on supervised release, the defendant cannot incur new lines of credit without the permission of his probation officer, must participate in debt counseling, and must participate in job training. The court also imposed a search condition and required the defendant to not associate with felons.

Harris previously plead guilty to the charges on December 9, 2010.

The investigation was conducted by the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the United States Secret Service. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Deirdre A. Durborow.
