Franklin County Man Pleads Guilty for Role in Bank Robberies

Stephen R. Wigginton, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on October 13, 2010, NICHOLAS MATTHEW HALL, age 39, of Franklin County, Illinois, pleaded guilty in United States District Court, East St. Louis, to a three-count indictment charging him with two counts of bank robbery and carrying and use of a firearm during a crime of violence. The maximum statutory penalties applicable to each of the bank robbery counts are 25 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, five years’ supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. The potential maximum penalty for the firearm offense is not less than seven years’ imprisonment up to life imprisonment (consecutive to the sentence imposed on the other counts), a $250,000 fine, five years’ supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. Sentencing is currently scheduled for January 28, 2011.

According to public court documents, on August 15, 2009, HALL drove another individual to the First Collinsville Bank in Collinsville, Illinois, and waited in his vehicle while the other individual went into the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money while displaying a Derringer pistol. The teller gave the other individual the money from her cash drawer.

On August 28, 2009, HALL drove the other individual to the Banterra Bank in Marion, Illinois, and waited in his vehicle while the other individual went into the bank and presented the teller with a note demanding money while displaying the Derringer pistol. The teller gave the other individual the money in her cash drawer.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Collinsville, Marion, Benton and West Frankfort Police Departments, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kit Morrissey.
