St. Clair County Man Pleads Guilty to Firearm and Bank Robbery Charges

A. Courtney Cox, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, announced today that on August 26, 2010, HARROLD A. SMITHEE, 44, of Caseyville, IL, plead guilty to two indictments, one charging possession of ammunition by a previously convicted felon, and the second charging bank robbery. The possession of ammunition offense carries a potential maximum sentence of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both; and up to three years’ supervised release. The bank robbery carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years’ of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release. Sentencing is currently scheduled for December 3, 2010.

According to information presented to the Court, the bank robbery occurred on March 15, 2010, at the UMB bank in Caseyville, Illinois.

Evidence supporting this case was obtained in an investigation by the Federal Bureau of investigation and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The case is assigned to Assistant United States Attorneys Deirdre Durborow and Michael J. Quinley for prosecution.
