California Man Gets 10-Year Prison Term for Trafficking Prescription Drugs and Possessing a Firearm Defendant Arrested in Lakewood, Washington as He Prepared to Deliver Oxycodone

  • Western District of Washington (206) 553-7970

CALVIN JEROME SHAW, 50, of Fairfield, California, was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Tacoma to 10 years in prison and five years of supervised release for possession of oxycodone with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. SHAW was arrested June 26, 2010, in Lakewood, Washington, when he arrived at a location to deliver oxycodone. SHAW was arrested by members of the South Sound Gang Task Force. At sentencing U.S. District Judge Ronald B. Leighton said, “These pills ruin lives.” Judge Leighton added that every time SHAW sold oxycodone, he impacted someone’s life in a negative way.

According to records filed in the case, SHAW and his wife were arrested at a planned rendevous point in Lakewood. The couple had driven up I-5 with oxycodone to deliver to a drug customer—in fact the drug deal had been arranged by an informant working with law enforcement. The couple was taken into custody in the McDonald’s parking lot near the South Tacoma Way Park and Ride. Police seized about 608 tablets of 80mg oxycodone pills and 770 tablets of 30mg oxycodone pills from CALVIN SHAW’s suitcase. When law enforcement searched the SHAW home near Sacramento, they found hundreds more prescription pills (including oxycodone), suspected crack cocaine, and about $12,000 in cash. Under the bed in the master bedroom, police also found and seized a loaded Smith and Wesson model 36 five-shot revolver.

SHAW pleaded guilty in December 2010. Under the terms of that plea agreement, SHAW is forfeiting the gun, ammo, and drugs, a Hummer SUV, two Rolex watches and a “Officine Panerai Luminor” watch, and other electronic items seized by law enforcement during their Lakewood arrest or the search of the California home.

The case was investigated by the South Sound Gang Task Force, which includes the FBI, the Tacoma and Lakewood Police Departments, and the Washington State Patrol and Department of Corrections. They received assistance regarding the California search from the Sacramento FBI and the Solano County Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Force.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gregory A. Gruber.
