Statement on Death of Lieutenant Osvaldo Albarati

FBI San Juan February 27, 2013
  • Special Agent Carlos Osorio (787) 759-1550

SAN JUAN—The FBI and Police of Puerto Rico are investigating the death of Lt. Osvaldo Albarati, a corrections officer from the Bureau of Prisons. He was shot to death on Highway 22, westbound just before exit 13, between mile markers 12.1 to 12.6. Lt. Albarati was heading home after his shift late last night at the Metropolitan Detention Center, located in Guaynabo. It is believed to be a drive-by shooting.

The highway was shut down for about eight hours earlier this morning as Puerto Rico Forensic Science Institute worked at the scene collecting evidence in coordination with the FBI Evidence Response Team. The road has now reopened. FBI victims assistance is also with the family, doing what they can to help them.

We are asking the public to report anything they may have seen in that area from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Please contact the FBI at 787-754-6000. The witness information will remain anonymous.

We are working in partnership with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Police of Puerto Rico, the Federal Bureau of Prisons, the U.S. Marshal Service, ATF, DEA, HIS, and the Puerto Rico Forensic Science Institute.
