Serial Robber Sentenced for Armed Bank Robbery Spree

U.S. Attorney’s Office October 05, 2010
  • Northern District of California (415) 436-7200

SAN FRANCISCO—Jason Dunlap, 32, of New York City was sentenced to 15 years and seven months in federal prison today and ordered to pay restitution for multiple counts of armed bank robbery and interstate transportation of a stolen motor vehicle, United States Attorney Melinda Haag announced.

Dunlap was responsible for the rash of knife-wielding bank robberies that occurred throughout San Francisco earlier this year. On July 20, 2010, he pled guilty to holding customers and tellers at knifepoint while demanding money from bank employees.

In addition to robbing the Citibank on Van Ness Avenue and the Wells Fargo on Grant Avenue, Dunlap robbed several other downtown banks, including East West Bank, Borel Private Bank, and City National Bank. During the majority of these robberies, Dunlap put the lives of others in jeopardy by putting a large hunting-style knife to the neck of the customer in line in front of him while yelling at tellers “Give me the hundreds! Hurry, hurry!” One such victim was an elderly woman who was in line just ahead of Dunlap when he grabbed her and put a knife to her throat. Dunlap also transported a stolen vehicle across state lines, which he used as the getaway vehicle following the robberies.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge William H. Alsup following a guilty plea to all six counts prosecutors had charged, five counts in violation of 18 United States Code Section 2113 (a) and (d), and one count in violation of 18 United States Code Section 2312. Judge Alsup also sentenced the defendant to a three- year period of supervised release as well as other standard conditions of federal supervision, including that Dunlap pay restitution to the victim banks of his crimes. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Prisons to begin serving his sentence today.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn R. Haun prosecuted the case with the assistance of legal assistant Rosario Calderon. The prosecution is the result of a six month investigation by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Violent Crimes Squad and the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
