California Man Sentenced to Three Years in Prison for Impersonating a U.S. Marshal Deputy

U.S. Attorney’s Office January 26, 2011
  • Southern District of California (619) 557-5610

United States Attorney Laura E. Duffy announced the conviction and sentencing today of Gregory Raymond Denny, Jr. and his wife, Karen Denny, of Hemet, California. Both defendants were convicted of the offense of impersonator making arrest and aiding and abetting in connection with the January 15, 2010 “arrest” and “deportation” of a then-28-year-old Philippine woman. During this morning’s sentencing hearing, United States District Judge Larry Alan Burns heard testimony from two of Gregory Denny’s former employers and from the victim. After hearing evidence and argument from both parties, Judge Burns sentenced Gregory Denny to serve three years in custody, the statutory maximum sentence. Denny was immediately remanded into custody. Judge Burns also imposed a one year term of supervised release. One of the conditions of Gregory Denny’s supervised release was that he not be employed in any law enforcement, bail enforcement, or security-related positions.

Defendant Karen Denny was sentenced yesterday before Judge Burns to serve five years of probation with a mental health counseling condition. Both defendants waived their right to appeal the sentences imposed.

These sentences follow guilty pleas entered during a November 2, 2010, hearing, when the Dennys admitted that they traveled together to the victim’s residence in Hemet, California, where Gregory Denny falsely announced that he was a law enforcement officer and was there to deport the victim. The Dennys further admitted handcuffing and searching the victim prior to transporting her to the Murietta Border Patrol Station, where Gregory Denny falsely identified himself as a U.S. Marshal and requested that U.S. Border Patrol agents take the victim into custody. After agents refused to take the victim into custody, the Dennys admitted that they transported her to various locations in Riverside and San Diego County before ultimately transporting her to the San Diego airport. Once at the airport, Gregory Denny identified himself as a U.S. Marshal, presented credentials and a badge, and informed Transportation Security Administration personnel that he was escorting a prisoner to a flight.
