Mary Frances Rook Named Special Agent in Charge of Salt Lake City Division

Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Mary F. Rook special agent in charge of the FBI’s Salt Lake City Division, where she will oversee all FBI operations in Utah, Idaho, and Montana. Ms. Rook most recently served as special agent in charge of the Anchorage Division.

Ms. Rook began her career with the FBI in 1984, serving as a serology technician in the laboratory. She entered on duty as a special agent in October 1986 and was assigned to the Milwaukee Division, Madison Resident Agency.

In 1990, Ms. Rook was transferred to the Los Angeles Division, where she investigated Mexican drug trafficking organizations. She was later promoted to supervisory special agent and spent another five years overseeing complex drug and money laundering cases. In 2000, she was selected as the first Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) supervisor in the Los Angeles Division, where she oversaw sensitive internal investigations.

In 2001, Ms. Rook transferred to FBI Headquarters as a supervisor in the Internal Investigation Unit of OPR. In 2003, she was promoted to unit chief of OPR’s Adjudication Unit. Ms. Rook reported to the Salt Lake City Division in November 2004 as assistant special agent in charge. In this role, she was responsible for all criminal, cyber, and administrative programs, as well as the five resident agencies located in Utah.

In September 2007, Ms. Rook relocated to Helena, Montana, to serve as assistant special agent in charge. In this capacity, she oversaw the Northern Border Liaison Officer, as well as the 15 resident agencies located in Montana and Idaho. She also retained responsibility for investigating gangs, criminal enterprises, and violent crimes.

In September 2008, Ms. Rook reported to the FBI’s Training Division in Quantico, Virginia, where she served as the Chief of the Law Enforcement Programs Section. In this role, she was responsible for those programs with a nexus to state, local, and international law enforcement, to include the FBI National Academy, the FBI National Executive Institute, regional Command Colleges, and international training.

In December 2010, Ms. Rook was promoted to her most recent position as special agent in charge of the Anchorage Division. During her tenure in Alaska, she oversaw several high-profile investigations, to include the successful prosecution of a group of extremists plotting to murder state and federal law enforcement officials as well as a federal judge and his family.

Ms. Rook is a native of Montana. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Colorado State University in 1983. In January 2013, she celebrated 29 years with the FBI.
