LINDEN, CA—For the third day this week, the collaborative team of FBI personnel and technical experts continued site preparations to facilitate excavation of an old well site in Linden, California. While excavations including hand digging and sifting were expected to begin today, the teams experienced their first challenge.

At the close of operations on Tuesday, January 8, test boring had indicated that the bottom of the well had yet to be reached despite the fact that a test bore had reached a depth of 75 feet below the opening of the well. Examination of soil brought to the surface during the boring process and exploration with a camera inserted into the bore site revealed that only fill dirt had been reached; no refuse, remains, or other materials were present and the hard pan bottom of the well had yet to be reached. In order to determine the actual depth of the bottom of the well, additional equipment was brought to the site and will continue through Thursday, January 10.
