Armed Bank Robber Sentenced to 34 Years in Prison

SACRAMENTO, CA—United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced today that United States District Judge Oliver W. Wanger sentenced Daniel Araisa Salinas, 31, to 34 years and three months in prison to be followed by five years of supervised release and ordered him to pay $165,715 in restitution to the victim banks for committing nine armed bank robberies and one attempted armed bank robbery. He pleaded guilty on the first day of trial on April 29, 2010.

According to court documents, Salinas robbed the banks listed below.

  • On April 20, 2004, Salinas and an unknown accomplice robbed the United Security Bank at 21574 West Manning Ave., in San Joaquin, stealing $16,000.
  • On June 1, 2004, he and an unknown accomplice robbed the Bank of America at 128 North 6th St. in Fowler, stealing $21,984. A dye pack was given out with the money, and it exploded after the they left the bank.
  • On March 21, 2008, he robbed Tri Counties Bank at 305 Trinity Ave., in Chowchilla, taking $4,227.
  • On April 2, 2008, Salinas robbed the California Bank & Trust, 126 North D St., Madera, taking $5,223.
  • On April 18, 2008, he robbed the United Securities Bank at 2151 West Shaw Ave., in Fresno, stealing $11,870.
  • On May 2, 2008, Salinas robbed the Wells Fargo Bank at 7014 North Cedar Ave., in Fresno, taking $40,383.
  • On June 13, 2008, he robbed the Wells Fargo Bank at 6780 North Milburn Ave., in Fresno, taking $27,764.
  • On August 8, 2008, he robbed the Wells Fargo Bank, 201 East Yosemite Ave., in Madera, taking $38,264.

On September 12, 2008, Salinas attempted to rob the Washington Mutual Bank at 7160 N. First St. in Fresno. The tellers saw him coming and kept the doors locked. Salinas tried unsuccessfully to open the doors and then fled. On that same date he returned to the Milburn Ave. Wells Fargo Bank and robbed it. He stole $24,592 and was arrested soon afterwards. During several of the robberies, Salinas brandished a handgun.

This case was the product of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Fresno Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Dawrence W. Rice and Susan Phan prosecuted the case.
