FRESNO, CA—United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced that today Chief United States District Judge Anthony W. Ishii sentenced Sean Michael Hunt, 34, of Fresno, to 15 years in prison for receipt of child pornography. The prison sentence will be followed by a lifetime term of supervised release during which Hunt will be required to maintain his registration as a sex offender, and his access to minors, computers, and the Internet will be restricted. Judge Ishii also sentenced Hunt to a separate term of 45 days in prison for violating the terms of his supervised release related to a 2004 conviction for possession of child pornography.

This case was the result of an investigation by Fresno FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force and the United States Probation Office. Assistant United States Attorney David Gappa prosecuted the case.

According to court documents, Hunt’s first conviction in September 2004 for possession of child pornography resulted in a prison term followed by 36 months of supervised release. In April 2008, Hunt violated the terms of his release by again acquiring child pornography and was later sentenced to nine months in prison. Upon release from custody, Hunt was again on supervised release.

On February 8, 2010, Hunt came to the federal courthouse in Fresno for an interview with his probation officer. He left a bag with the court security officers at the main entrance. At the interview, he was arrested for unlawfully using a controlled substance, based on a failed drug test. Officers searched the bag Hunt had left with the security officers and found an electronic storage device containing images of child pornography that Hunt downloaded from the Internet. Hunt has been detained as a flight risk since his arrest.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood (PSC), a nationwide initiative by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, PSC mobilizes federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
