Former Bank Teller Sentenced on Embezzlement Charge
Crystal Conner Will Serve 18 Months for Stealing Over $169,000

U.S. Attorney’s Office February 10, 2009
  • Western District of Virginia (540) 857-2250

United States Attorney Julia C. Dudley announced today that Crystal Anderson Conner, age 28, of Boones Mill, Virginia, was sentenced yesterday in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Roanoke for using her position as a bank teller to embezzle money.

Conner, a former head bank teller at Planters Bank and Trust, now know as Stellar One, waived her right to an indictment and pled guilty to a one count information in October 2008, charging her with embezzlement. At that time the defendant admitted to stealing $169,200 from her former employer.

Yesterday in District Court, Conner was ordered to serve 18 months in federal prison. She will be required to serve five years of supervised release thereafter and pay a total of $169,200 in restitution.

“The United States Attorney’s Office takes financial crimes such as this extremely seriously,” United States Attorney Julia Dudley said today. “Ms. Conner betrayed the trust provided to her by her employer and used the knowledge of the inner workings of the banking industry to steal a significant amount of money, for that she must be punished.”

According to evidence presented by Assistant United States Attorney Steven Pfleger, between October 2004, and October 2006, Conner stole $169,200 from the former Planters Bank and Trust and deposited those funds into her personal checking account. Those funds were used to pay bills, take trips, make home repairs and buy furniture.

The investigation of the case was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Steven Pflegler is prosecuting the case for the United States.
