Mr.
Schiff: Hi, welcome to "FBI 100, A Closer
Look." I'm Neal Schiff of the Bureau's Office
of Public Affairs along with FBI Historian Dr.
John Fox. John, the FBI has a Hall of Honor. What
is the Hall of Honor?
Dr.
Fox: "Neal, the Hall of Honor recognizes
our Special Agents who have given the ultimate
sacrifice. Who have died either as the result
of adversarial contact or in the line of a law
enforcement duty. Those are our agents who gave
up their lives doing their jobs."
Mr. Schiff: How many Special Agents have a
place in the Hall of Honor?
Dr. Fox: "We recognize 34 agents as of
today who have given up their lives as a result
of adversarial contact. In other words people
who have been shot or killed in the line of duty
in interaction with someone who they were either
trying to arrest or in the course of some other
criminal or terrorist action. We also recognize
those agents, 14 of them, who have given up their
lives in pursuing another law enforcement duty.
This could be anything from a training accident
to another kind of loss of life during an investigation
but that was not directly connected to the actions
of an adversary."
Mr.
Schiff: Special
Agents who lose their lives in the line of duty
are always to be remembered, honored, and shall
always have a special place within the FBI? Heroes
to some. Family to others. We shall always remember,
John?
Dr.
Fox: "Absolutely Neal. It's very important
to realize that the people of the FBI put their
lives on the line every day. And that our Special
Agents, especially because of the role that they
play in investigating crimes and protecting our
National Security, are at risk when they go out
on the job. It's something that is very sobering
to think about and very sad to know that we will
be adding more names in the future as we continue
to pursue the responsibilities set before us."
Mr.
Schiff:
On the Internet at www.fbi.gov there's plenty
of FBI history. Check it out. From the FBI's Public
Affairs office, along with Bureau Historian Dr.
