Mr.
Schiff: Hi, welcome to "FBI 100, A Closer
Look." I'm Neal Schiff of the Bureau's Office
of Public Affairs along with FBI Historian Dr.
John Fox. John, it's 2008. Technology surrounds
us. Years ago there were no computers; now almost
everyone has one. And criminals use them?
Dr.
Fox: "Well Neal just like in the Gangster
Era when the criminals were trying to get the
fastest cars and the most powerful guns, they're
looking to the technology world and grabbing the
best technology they can. It's sometimes hard
to keep up but we're doing our best."
Mr. Schiff: To meet that head on, the FBI
created the Cyber Division, right?
Dr. Fox: "Yes Neal. It was created only
a few years ago because of the growing number
of cyber investigations from Phishing to Scamming;
people over the Internet to the proliferation
of pornography. Especially that that harms children."
Mr.
Schiff:
Of course, Innocent Images is one of the key initiatives?
Dr.
Fox: "Innocent Images began in the early
1990s out of Baltimore where Bureau agents and
other police in the area were actively targeting
people who were using computers to exploit children
to try and meet them in chat rooms; to try and
convince them that they were someone else. To
pedal child pornography and other things to the
children in trying to lure them in for abuse."
Mr.
Schiff: Check
out the FBI's Internet page at fbi.gov for more
information about the battle against cyber crimes.
From the FBI's Public Affairs office, along with
Bureau Historian Dr. John Fox, I'm Neal Schiff
