Mr.
Schiff: Hi, welcome to "FBI 100, A Closer
Look." I'm Neal Schiff of the Bureau's Office
of Public Affairs along with FBI Historian Dr.
John Fox. John, police officers from around the
world come to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia,
for training. Tell us about the world famous National
Academy?
Dr.
Fox: "Neal, the Academy was created in 1935
because the FBI realized that police officers
around the country were not getting opportunities
to receive professional police training. And the
Bureau thought it would be a good idea to try
and offer some of what it was learning about the
law and about investigations to all of our fellow
officers."
Mr.
Schiff: In January 2000, the National Academy
at the FBI Academy hit a milestone?
Dr.
Fox: "Yes, on the 9th we marked the start
of the 200th National Academy class. In the number
of years that classes have been going on we've
trained thousands of police officers from around
the world. Beginning in 1937 we were training
international police officers."
Mr.
Schiff: What are some of the topics covered
by the FBI for the police officers at the National
Academy?
Dr.
Fox: "Anything from the latest techniques
in criminal investigative work to the developments
in forensic science that can be applied to those
investigations to the latest changes in the law
whether it was just passed by Congress or the
recent interpretations of the courts and how that
applies to the work that police officers do."
Mr.
Schiff: From the FBI's Public Affairs office,
along with Bureau Historian Dr. John Fox, I'm
Neal Schiff with "FBI 100, A Closer Look."
