FBI Director Robert S.
Mueller, III, today announced the appointment of Robert
J. Jordan as the Assistant Director of the Office of
Professional Responsibility, which directs the investigation
of crimes and serious misconduct by FBI employees and
imposes administrative punishment of such misconduct.
He will be replacing Michael A. DeFeo who is retiring
from the FBI. Mr. DeFeo has been with the FBI since
1996 and was instrumental in revising the FBI's disciplinary
process. He will be leaving the FBI to teach at the
University of Trento in Northern Italy.
Director Mueller stated
that, "I have known Mike for many years and he
has an outstanding reputation for integrity. His efforts
went a long way to insure the integrity of the Bureau.
Mike will be missed and we wish him success in the future."
Mr. Jordan entered on
duty with the Bureau in 1980 and has served in the Boston,
San Diego, and Newark field offices. While serving in
the Boston office, Mr. Jordan had the distinction of
being the case agent of the longest running police corruption
case in the FBI. Because of Mr. Jordan's efforts, a
total of almost forty subjects were convicted, half
of them police officers, of Detective rank or higher.
In 1998, Mr. Jordan was promoted to the position of
Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Newark field
office, where he supervised a large White Collar Crime/Corruption
program for the entire state of New Jersey. Most recently,
he has served as Chief of the FBI's Integrity in Government/Civil
Rights Section at FBI Headquarters.
In appointing Mr. Jordan
to this office, Director Mueller said: "Mr. Jordan's
strengths, both as an investigator and as an administrator,
will bring valued experience to an office that insures
the integrity of the FBI." The integrity of the
FBI's investigative efforts and its personnel is a priority
for Director Mueller. In bringing Mr. Jordan to this
position, Director Mueller notes "the FBI's commitment
to having a process that insures all allegations of
employee misconduct or wrong doing are thoroughly investigated
and appropriate disciplinary action is taken."
