FBI Director Robert S.
Mueller, III, today announced the appointment of Kevin
P. Donovan as Assistant Director in Charge of the New
York Office. ADIC Donovan will head the FBI's largest
field office, replacing Barry Mawn, who retires in March
2002.
In making his selection,
Director Mueller noted "the significant, intimate
knowledge of the New York Division that Kevin has acquired
while serving in senior leadership positions there and
in the neighboring Newark field office is his greatest
qualification for such a critical post."
ADIC Donovan said, regarding
his vision for the New York Office, "In view of
the events of September 11, 2001, the focus of the New
York Office will continue to be preventing another incident
through interaction with our partners in state and local
law enforcement. We will also continue our focus on
the criminal threat to the livelihoods of New Yorkers."
As head of the New York
Office, ADIC Donovan will oversee approximately 1,100
Special Agents and 800 professional support employees
and a region composed of New York City, Long Island,
and the counties of Westchester, Rockland, Dutchess,
Orange, Putnam, and Sullivan.
ADIC Donovan entered on
duty with the FBI as a Special Agent on June 26, 1978.
His first assignment after completing FBI Academy training
was to the Newark field office; there he specialized
in interstate theft matters and hostage negotiations
and served as a police training instructor. In 1988,
he was promoted to a supervisory position in the Criminal
Investigative Division at FBIHQ. In 1991, he became
Supervisory Senior Resident Agent of the Philadelphia
field office's Scranton, PA, Resident Agency. In December
1996, he became Assistant Special Agent in Charge of
the New York Office's Administrative Division and, in
January 1998, of its Organized Crime Branch. In May
1999, he became Associate SAC of the New York Office's
Criminal Division. In January 2001, he was promoted
to SAC of the Special Operations Division of the New
York Office. Since April 2001, he has served as SAC
of the Newark field office.
ADIC Donovan, age 52,
was born in Oceanside, NY. He holds a Bachelor of Science
degree in biology from Adelphi University, a Master
of Criminal Justice degree from John Jay College of
Criminal Justice, and a certificate in public administration
from the University of Southern California's Washington,
D.C., Public Affairs Center. He worked as a probation
officer in Nassau County, NY, and as an instructor at
Somerset County College in Branchburg, NJ, before joining
the FBI.
The FBI has 18 Assistant
Directors - 15 who head divisions at FBI Headquarters
and three who head field offices in New York City, Los
Angeles, and Washington, D.C. The remaining 53 field
offices are headed by Special Agents in Charge. The
Assistant Director position is the third-highest currently-staffed
position in the FBI, after the Director and the four
Executive Assistant Directors.
