Paroled Robber Sentenced to Prison for String of Credit Union Robberies

U.S. Attorney’s Office September 23, 2009
  • District of Oregon (503) 727-1000

PORTLAND, OR—A paroled bank robber was sentenced to prison this morning in federal court following his pleas of guilty to five counts of unarmed bank robbery. The robberies occurred at various credit unions in Eugene and in the Portland metropolitan area. Marc Timothy Rzegocki was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Anna J. Brown to 115 months’ imprisonment followed by a three-year term of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a total of $23,124 in restitution to the victim credit unions.

The charges against Rzegocki arose from a string of eight robberies which occurred at various federally insured credit unions in Eugene and the Portland area between June 27, 2007, and August 20, 2007. At the time he committed those robberies, Rzegocki had absconded from parole following a 1986 federal conviction for two counts of unarmed bank robbery. The 1986 convictions stemmed from a series of nine credit union robberies Rzegocki committed earlier that year.

Rzegocki was arrested on an outstanding parole violation warrant in August 2007. He was charged with robbing six credit unions a total of eight times. Pursuant to a plea agreement he reached with the United States, Rzegocki pled guilty to five of the eight robberies, and agreed to pay full restitution in connection with all eight robberies.

Rzegocki’s sentence represents an upward departure from the federal sentencing guidelines. Judge Brown decided that such a departure was warranted due to Rzegocki’s extensive and serious criminal history. Rzegocki’s sentence will run concurrently with a parole revocation sentence he is currently serving in connection with his 1986 bank robbery conviction.

This case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Portland Police Bureau, and the Eugene Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Gary Sussman.
